I either play cops or criminals - I'm either on the right side of the law or the wrong side. I gravitate toward edgier material because it suits my nature. I find it fascinating to play. I'm just that kind of person.

Introduction:
Raised in North Bend, she once worked in a Schuyler meat-packing plant before becoming a five-time Emmy nominee and a forensic investigator on the CBS drama “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Marg Helgenberger is now on televesion 25 years, and still glowing. She start in little spots like "Ryan's Hope" and "Shell Game", but after China Beach the actress start her way and didn't stop yet. She did basically drama movies, work with oscar actors like Geoge Clooney, Julia Roberts and Forest Whitaker. Now she is most know as Catherine Willows from CSI, one of the most poupular TV shows.

Early life
Marg Helgenberger (pronounced with a hard 'G', unlike the name Marge) was born in Fremont, Nebraska to Kay, a nurse, and Hugh Helgenberger, a meat inspector. She has German and Irish ancestry and had a Catholic upbringing.[4] One of her first jobs, as a teenager, was spending her summers and her Christmas breaks working as a ‘boner’ at the meat packing plant where her father was employed. Helgenberger played the French horn in her high school (North Bend Central High School) marching band. Until she went to college, Helgenberger wanted to be a nurse like her mother. Helgenberger earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Begening of her Career:
After starting her university education at Kearney State College, she transferred to Chicago's Northwestern University, where she majored in speech and drama and performed in plays such as A Streetcar Named Desire. In another school production, this time The Taming of the Shrew, a scout spotted her and immediately told her about a possible role on the soap opera. Helgenberger started as a local news weather girl in her native Nebraska. The news producer felt her name was too long and made her change it to Margi McCarty. Helgenberger debuted on the series in March 1982 playing Siobhan Ryan Novak, until 1986. Although she was actually the third actress to play the role, she is the one most identified with the part. After taking a rain check in order to complete her studies, she signed on with the daytime show and stayed there from 1982 to 1986. She met future husband Alan Rosenberg on the set and they got married in 1989.

Her first big step:
After her daytime soap stint, Helgenberger moved to her first of many unconventional roles. This one, on the ABC show China Beach, required her to play a heroin-addicted prostitute. She immediately grew into the character and the Viewers for Quality Television Awards rewarded her with the Best Supporting Actress trophy in 1988, 1989 and 1990. She also received an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy in 1990.

Throughout the early '90s, Helgenberger was involved with several shows for short periods, doing guest spots and starring in several miniseries. After gigs in small-time movies like Distant Cousins and Blind Vengeance, she landed a significant role in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence 1995 blockbuster, Bad Boys. She also appeared in the sci/fi action flick Species that same year (as well as the sequel in 1998) and co-starred with Steven Seagal in 1997's Fire Down Below. She also had a recurring role on ER in 1996.

Her career now increasingly busy, Helgenberger churned out great performances in three made-for-TV movies: Murder Live!, Gold Coast (an Elmore Leonard novel adaptation, and interestingly co-starring CSI: Miami's David Caruso) and Perfect Murder, Perfect Town, in which she played yet another controversial role as Patsy Ramsey, mother of JonBenet. These accomplishments overshadowed such questionable calls as doing The Tommyknockers in 1993 and a film called The Last Time I Committed Suicide. Still, many contended that Helgenberger had not yet a made a name for herself (no pun intended).

But the critics faded once Steven Soderbergh cast her as a woman whose cancer-stricken family helps Erin Brockovich uncover important evidence, in the Oscar-winning 2000 film. This key exposure caught the eye of CBS execs, who requested an audition and hired Helgenberger for the role of Catherine Willows, the stripper turned forensics expert (whose special skills include blood spatter analysis) on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Helgenberger has stated that she was angered at the franchising of CSI. She has also stated that she is unlikely to stay past her current contract on CSI which ends in 2008. She says that she often plays hacky sack with the guys during their free time on set. Helgenberger got the chance to act with her husband, Alan Rosenberg, again when he guest starred on CSI, season 5 (Weeping Willows) and season 7 (Leaving Las Vegas).

In 2005, Universal Studios, submitted Helgenberger in the best supporting actress category for the Oscars for her performance as Ann Foreman in her 2004 movie In Good Company. In 2007, She was featured in the movies Conan: Red Nails and Mr. Brooks. In mid 2006, Helgenberger’s home town of North Bend, Nebraska, population 1213, renamed the street on which Helgenberger had her childhood home ‘Helgenberger Avenue’.

Details:
Backed by her incredible acting skills (she was nominated for an Emmy in 2001, for her portrayal of Willows), the show's riveting storylines have set the bar very high for competing crime dramas. Since 2000, Helgenberger has transformed from actress on a fledgling show to one of the leading ladies of the small screen, pulling in the big dollars. With all her hard work, she deserves this sort of credit. We only hope she can continue her magic and perhaps try her hand at film once again. It's rare for a television star's career to span a lengthy amount of time. Fads change and shows that were once popular often disappear, leaving their actors in the dust. Some survive, but for the most part, TV remains a cutthroat business. That is why Helgenberger's rise to the top is all the more special. She has maintained a solid footing on TV despite being involved in some shaky shows that didn't go far.

Her hard work and perseverance extends to the big screen as well, with bit parts eventually leading to significant roles in blockbuster movies like Bad Boys and Species I and II. She is a refreshing personality whose blue-collar, hardnosed approach to acting makes her one of the good guys (or girls). In fact, Helgenberger's name is not the only standout thing about her: she's an edgy risk taker suited for tough roles like that of Patsy Ramsey in the made-for-TV movie Perfect Murder, Perfect Town, based on the murder of young JonBenet.

One wouldn't think that handling maggot-filled cadavers would attract many fans to Helgenberger's character on CSI, but she has welcomed TV stardom with open arms. Audiences love her as much for her 'tude as for her look, which is often described as wild and untamed. The fact that Helgenberger continues to perform with gusto makes her future as bright as her present.

Never afraid to get her hands dirty, Marg (whose name is pronounced with a hard "G") and her work ethic will surely never be turned down for a part. She's one of those cool moms (her son Hugh Howard - 1990) you wish you had when you were a kid -- a down-to-earth dame who is as hip and free-spirited as her child. Helgenberger consistently breaks the mold by playing characters as unconventional as she is, while still maintaining a certain modesty about her and her willingness to learn.

Authentically portraying a hooker (in China Beach), a criminologist (in CSI) and a cancer patient (in Erin Brockovich), among others, is no easy task. Solid training in her youth followed by much practice on various long- and short-lived television shows have put her on a level of experience that is head and shoulders above that of many of her peers. Helgenberger truly deserves a lot of credit simply for the sheer diversity in the roles she has played, and her longevity in the dog-eat-dog business of acting is testament to her ability.

Media:
Helgenberger continues to be included in lists of Hollywood's Most Beautiful. In 2003 she was listed on People Magazine’s "50 Most Beautiful People", #16 on VH1's 40 Hottest Women over 40, number 15 of The 25 Most Attractive (Famous) Women in America in 2004, she was Esquire Magazine’s “5 More Women We Love” in 2002, in 2004 she ranked number 35, 30, 29, 20, 17, 12 and 9 on The Glamour Girls Hot 100 due to her movie In Good Company and her TV Guide cover. She was on the list for about 10 weeks and spent 1 week on the top ten. She is the 4th oldest woman to be in the top ten, her character, Catherine Willows, along with the character of Gil Grissom, was named number 82 in "Bravo's 100 Greatest TV Characters" and on March 2006 Catherine Willows was named number 6 on The Star's Top Ten Hottests TV Characters, in 2007, she was named one of the most pleasant celebrites on E! online's Answer B!tch Q&A page, and on March 2007 Helgenberger was named one of the sexiest TV stars of 2007 by TV Guide Magazine.

In 2003, Helgenberger was asked to pose in Playboy Magazine but turned it down. In fact, Helgenberger's only on-screen nude appearance to date was in the 1996 film "Frame By Frame". Helgenberger and Jorja Fox sang Stand by Me as a duet for What a Pair 4!! This is an annual charity event to raise money for breast cancer research.

CSI co-star Gary Dourdan's nickname for Helgenberger is "Margalicious”. Helgenberger's production company "Don't Call Me Marge!" is her humorous jab at people’s mispronunciation of her name.

She loves the Steely Dan song “Babylon Sisters” for the lyrics “Drive west on Sunset to the sea,” which she and her husband did on their first date.

Personal Like:
In 1984, Helgenberger met Alan Rosenberg, a guest actor on Ryan's Hope. The two became friends and started dating in 1986. They married in 1989 and have one son, Hugh Howard Rosenberg (born October 21, 1990), named after Helgenberger's father, Hugh Helgenberger.

A result of her mother's 27 year battle against breast cancer, Helgenberger and her husband Alan Rosenberg have become very involved in the fight against breast cancer. They host the Marg and Alan's Celebrity Weekend every year in Omaha, Nebraska and have done so since since 1997.
